Basics of Search Engine Optimization for Education - Tip #6 - Content

Tip #6 - Improving Content - Content can mean many things to different people, but in this case, lets just talk about the words on a web page. Let us say that you want to optimize your web page for the key phrase "teaching math." The obvious suggestion is that you want to have these words on the web page as much as possible. But other things to consider - you want it as close to the top as possible. You also want the words as close in proximity to each other as possible. For example, having the different words "teaching" and "math" on the page is helpful, and multiple times is even better, but it has the greatest value when they are right next to each other as "teaching math." That may seem obvious with this key phrase, but there are many times when this is more difficult. If you use tables to structure your web page(s), you may find that key phrase for your site are far down in the HTML code, even though they appear close to the top of the actual web page. If this is the case, it is likely that the search engines will still consider those key phrases to be further down the page. And, as mentioned in previous posts, using common sense is always the best policy when writing content - always make sure it makes sense in the context of the page.
