If I were to ask you to look up something on the Internet, where would you start? Google? Yahoo? Ask.com? Search engines have become the defacto way to bring order to the unwieldy ocean of information on the Internet and the vast majority of people use these tools as their first place to find new information about their interests. Potential students from every demographic, interested in every discipline, in every profession are flocking to the Internet search engines.

There is no excuse!

You have to get your institution into the search engines, because that is where potential students prefer to find information about their future education. It is not enough to just build an effective web site, that is just not enough in today's environment.

Just to start, there are 3 things that you should become familiar with:

  1. Building an effective web site;
  2. Optimizing that web site for search engines; and
  3. Advertising through search engines.

For more advanced techniques, also familiarize yourself with Web 2.0 and social network marketing concepts. All of these topics are fair game for these blog entries and I will continue to cover these and related issues. So continue to check back often!
