Marketing Guru Seth Godin offers his perspective on the motivations of creating a YouTube video. To summarize, the video needs to be focused on something your audience is interested in, not something you are interested in. This probably sounds obvious, but take a look at a lot of YouTube videos out there, especially ones created with some commercial motivations, and apparently, it isn't as obvious as it sounds.

However, this doesn't mean the video has to be ultra-fun or ultra-catchy. Entertainment is just one way to appeal to an audience, and it can be very effective in breaking through the clutter, but it there are other ways as well. Providing key information or providing something that will really touch them on an emotional level are other ways to capture their attention. It just has to appeal to the market you are trying to reach.
